Baptism of fire for COT crews!

The 2016 Classic Outback Trial finally got under way, after Friday’s storms which lashed the region with devastating effect, saw yesterday’s seven stages of competition cancelled.

An eager field of 52 crews from around Australia and overseas gathered at Lasseters early in the morning against the sun-lit backdrop of the magnificent MacDonnell Ranges to begin the quest to conquer the Australian Outback. Awaiting the crews would be five challenging stages covering a distance of 187 competitive kilometres to the north of Alice Springs. Continue reading

Rally crews take day off while Alice Springs cleans up

The Central Australian town of Alice Springs where the Classic outback Trial is based, was hit hard by freak weather on Friday afternoon, forcing the cancellation of the first days stages. Severe wind gusts carried in 63 mm of rain and an avalanche of hail that has flooded much of the town, brought down trees and cut off many roads. Roads crossing the normally dry Todd River are still underwater today allowing the locals and the crews to photograph the rare sight of a flooded Todd River, about the only redeeming feature for the rally crews, disappointed to miss the first days competition.

A spokesperson for the NTES said this afternoon that they had so far dealt with over 80 calls for assistance to clear fallen trees from houses and cars and to help clean up homes with flood damage and damage to roofs.

The Alice was turned white with the tonnes of hail that was dumped, and the hail damage has caused several roofs to collapse in town, including at the hospital and the Imparja TC studio. There are media reports that some parts of streets in the town had been under a metre of water.

The ABC news website has quoted the Bureau of Meteorology as saying that Alice Springs hasn’t had a severe storm with hail and flooding in June for the last 20 years.

Speaking shortly after the decision to cancel the first day’s competition was made, event director Phillip Bernadou speaking from Lasseters Hotel where the Rally is based said “We’re really disappointed for the competitors but the roads south of town are just impassable. We’re hoping that drying weather over the next few days will mean no more interruptions to the rally.”

The cancellation of the first days stages means crews have an extra day to prepare their cars and do final checks on fuel consumption and spares inventory. It also means they have a day to enjoy Alice Springs and surrounds as well as the Lasseters entertainment complex.  “Regrettable though it is, it is a great place for a day off.” observed a philosophical Bernadou.

The 2016 Classic outback Trial has attracted 52 rally crews in classic rally cars like Ford Mustangs, Porsche’s and Datsun 260Z’s, including 4 cars and crews from overseas.  Each rally crew will have the support of one or more service crews and the event itself will bring about 50 officials in from all over Australia. In total, at least 350 people associated with the Classic Outback Trial will be in Alice Springs for over a week.

The event runs from June 18 to 24 and starts and finishes each day at Lasseters in Alice Springs.

Do you have a notice for the Competitor Classifieds?

The COT team is happy to post notices from COT competitors, supporters or friends – we’re happy to provide this space to support our community.

We’re expecting the notices to be related to the event – such as a car for sale, a service that will be useful to COT crews, a co-driver looking for a team, etc.

We’re not expecting a notice about your Aunt Maud’s lamington shop in Upotipotpon. (Yes, there is such a place… but not sure there’s a lamington shop there. Or any shops…)

If you have a “classified” for the board email it to us at info@classicoutbacktrial.com.au

Director’s cut: A hectic start to 2015…

An update from COT 2016 Event Director, Philip Bernadou.

Work really is well under way on the 2016 event. January and February have been very busy with getting the book out and a fabulous trip to the Race Retro historic motorsport expo in the UK. There will be a report and some pics from that on the website shortly.

Our focus now is very much on how we can put together a bigger and better 2016 event. Make no mistake, the event focus is on the CLASSIC Outback Trial. But, my accountant has stipulated that the event has to be profitable, so expanding the event to include other categories will hopefully provide an increase in entries.

Steve Hollowood and I will be heading off to Alice at the end of April to put the event on the road. The trip conducted in June last year with Bob Watson and Bob Carpenter laid the groundwork by contacting all the property owners and obtaining the necessary assistance of shires, property owners etc required to run an event of this size.

As the event gets bigger and demands more time, we have added another member to our organising team, Steuart Snooks, in the role of Functions Coordinator. Steuart has navigated in the Red Centre to Gold Coast and several COT events and is the son of our Clerk of Course of course… Welcome on board Steuart.

To keep our organising team fired up it would be great to have some idea about who is going to have a run in the 2016 Classic Outback Trial.

We have 10 nominations to date but an indication of intentions will keep the aforementioned accountant and the team very happy. A quick email to me at philip@classicoutbacktrial.com.au would be very welcome!

Keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter channels for pics from our survey. Steve and I are both looking forward to it!

Regards
Philip Bernadou

Classic Outback Service

Waiting…

This story, about the Service Crews on the 2014 Classic Outback Trial, was written by COT wordsmith Alan Baker and appeared in the March 2105 issue of HRA News – the bimonthly magazine from the Historic Rally Association. Alan and the HRA have generously provided the attached copy of the report for our reading pleasure. It’s a great story, supported by some wonderful pics by Ian Smith Autopix and Alan himself.

Service crews – last to leave and first to arrive. Come along for the ride on the 2014 Classic Outback Trial...

How would you like a couple of weeks off work driving around the countryside? A different town each night, new scenery each day and new people with similar interests to meet. With a bit of luck, maybe someone will contribute towards fuel and accommodation too. Sound Okay? Great. Bring your sunscreen.
