Q&A with Heather Worth

As we look forward to the 2018 Classic Outback Trial we caught up briefly with Heather Worth who will be contesting her first COT for Team Xena.

1. Tell us a bit about Team Xena.
Team Xena is the combination of my daughter Jo Worth (driver) and myself (co-driver) and our two 1968 Volvo Amazon 122S’s – Xena is named after Xena the Warrior Princess (from the 90s TV series) and Gabrielle, after Xena’s side kick. Xena and Gabrielle have been on many great endurance rallying adventures both locally and abroad.

2. Where did the rally journey start for you and Jo?
I have owned lots of classic European cars but Jo and I only started rallying in 2013.

3. What do you love most about rallying?
We live the excitement of rallying but also the camaraderie. We love being a team of two women – mother and daughter.

4. This is your first COT but you’ve got a bit of experience in long distance events, haven’t you?
In Xena (our NZ-based car) we’ve done the Road to Mandalay Rally, which is a 26-day adventure from Singapore to Yangon in Myanmar, several NZ Targa events and in 2016 we did the Peking to Paris Rally – 36 days across Mongolia, Russia and into Europe ending up in the Place Vendome.

5. How did you hear about the COT?
I heard about the COT when I co-drove in the NZ Silver Fern Rally and then through the Endurance Rally Club of Australia (ECRA). Many club members are doing the regularity trial but we wanted to do the competition.

6. What attracted you to enter the event?
We wanted to do a real endurance rally on red dirt.

7. Tell us a bit about the car you’ve entered.
Gabrielle is our red Australian-based 1968 122S Volvo Amazon that is being prepared by Matt Bryson, that has done shorter rallies including the Southern Mountain Trial Revisited and the 2017 Great Endeavour Rally.

8. What would you say to someone else contemplating an entry for COT18?
Particularly if you are a woman wanting to take part – do it. Gabrielle is not fast but we are giving the COT a red hot go!
