Twice Classic Outback Trial winner, Andrew Travis, is back again in 2016 with usual co-driver, his father David. But – next year they have a new car. Let’s find out more…
What car will you be running in the 2016 COT? What is special; what is its history; where is it at?
A Nissan Silvia. We are half way through the build process. We have a unique setup which is not finalised but we hope to have the right formula to be competitive. We plan to be finished around September 2015.
Who will be in your team? Who is your co-driver, team manager or service crew? What’s your history as a team?
Dad will be navigating as usual. We have been competing together for a long time and I think the navigation side of long distance rallying is so important. I’m lucky he is good at it. Ian Wilson is building the car and will be servicing. We haven’t organised a second service crew member for Ian to annoy as yet. The team and car is brand new so we will see how we go.
If you’ve competed in the COT before, what do you like about the event – what has bought you back?
It is the best holiday I can think of. Spending a week with the boys driving a rally car in anger is great fun. The event formula have evolved over the years and it just works. I like long stages and the roadbooks are spot on. We visit interesting places and meet people from all over Australia. Most of all I like the competition and that anything can happen.
If you’re new to the COT, what has attracted you to the event?
I have only missed one in 2009 because I broke my arm 3 weeks before the event.
What are your expecting from the 2016 COT; what are you looking forward to?
Lots of competitive km’s and long stages. I am also looking forward to the blackjack table and pushing dad in the pool at the end of the rally.
Have you been to Alice Springs before? What are you expecting or looking forward to seeing?
Yes, we competed in the Red Centre to Gold Coast event.
Are you planning a bit of a Red Centre holiday as part of your rally? Will your partner, family or friends be joining you?
We are going up the week before to spectate at Fink. I might have a few mates tag along for the week before COT.
Who are your sponsors or supporters?
A few locals around Bathurst help us to get the car ready but the tooth fairy is the main sponsor.
What is/was your favourite rally car?
What is your most memorable rallying moment?
3rd outright in the 2013 Australian Safari.
What will you be doing to get ready for the 2016 COT?
Learning to drive the new car at Alpine and local events.
Where are you, and what are you doing as you answer these questions?
At work in Bathurst trying to keep warm. It was -6 @ 8am today.
Thanks Andrew! We’ll be looking forward to seeing the Silvia in the back half of this year – and of course, having you and David and the team in the COT again.
(Editors note – Andrew sent this through a couple of weeks ago – it wasn’t actually that temperature in Bathurst *today*!)
