Media push for the 2014 Classic Outback Trial

The Classic Outback Trial is ramping up event coverage for 2014. We’ve recruited a skilled and experienced media team to bring you all the news and pictures from the COT during the event.

Legendary 70s and 80s motoring photographer, Ian Smith, has joined the COT team as our official 2014 photographer. Ian operated as “Autopix” and was a very active photographer in all forms of motorsport and the motoring industry. He was also an early Editor of Auto Action and an active rally competitor in Victoria, navigated by the late Jim Maude. Many will remember the distinctive yellow Datsun 1600 with twin black film strips over the car.  Ian’s chauffeur on the COT will be Chris Brown, also a published rally photographer from the black and white days and an experienced rallyist. Chris was Victorian Rally Champion in 80 and 82.  Chris and Ian will follow the event, taking hundreds of pics each day and will publish a selection of the best on our website each night.

Alan Baker is the other principle in our team of media legends.  Alan, a Mini Club stalwart since the early 80s, has been active in all aspects of club motorsport, including competing in rallies, motorkhanas and circuit racing.  He is the award winning editor of the Historic Rally Association’s “Bulletin” and an active classic rallyist in Victoria.  Alan will be Emcee at all functions and day starts and will be our “Roving Reporter” during the event, publishing news updates from the field and a report at the end of each day.

The COT organisers and the media team met recently to start plans for covering the event. With Ian, Alan and the scoring team of Garry Searle and Alex Ross all on the job, we’ll be able to publish pics, scores and news through our website each evening. And, depending on coverage, we will have news and updates during the day as well.

We are planning to print a coffee table book soon after the event to feature the photographs and stories of the 2014 Classic Outback Trial. We will be taking book orders before the rally. We are planning on offering a personalised version for competitors – this will make a great 2014 COT momento and could be a very special “thank you” for sponsors or support team members.

We’re really excited to have Ian, Alan and Chris working with us – and by some of the opportunities their experience and involvement brings.  Watch this space for more information soon!
